TALES FROM THE CITY

Sure It's for Me?

January 20, 2008

On October 2, our wedding anniversary, my husband and I surprised each other by sending something to work. The secretary called me to the office, and there was a beautiful bouquet of flowers waiting for me. But the card said, "To Gloria Sears." Confused, I called the florist and told them that they must have mixed up the cards. They said that's what my husband asked them to write and that they thought it was strange, too. I called my husband to thank him, then brought up the card. Turns out, it was supposed to say "two glorious years."

Narrow Market

I recently ran into an old friend I hadn't seen in quite a while. While catching up, I informed him I was engaged, and he asked me what my fiancee (now wife) did for a living. I told him she was a nurse working in a community health center in Boston but that she had worked at several hospitals in the city, including Brigham and Women's. He started laughing and told me that growing up, he thought Brigham and Women's was an ice cream store just for girls.
