TALES FROM THE CITY

Dinner on the Fly

February 17, 2008

Last August, my wife and I decided that after a hard day of working, we were going to enjoy our dinner at Crane Beach in Ipswich. We stopped off at Bruni's, picked up a couple of our favorite sandwiches and our beach chairs, then sat at the ocean's edge to soak in the view. My wife unwrapped her sandwich and was about to put it in her mouth when a sea gull swooped in and took it from her hand. Being veterans of the beach, we had seen our share of aggressive gulls, but never anything quite like this.

Hold It, Buddy

Last month in Belmont, I was driving up Clifton Street toward the top of Belmont Hill when I came upon a gaggle of Canada geese. The birds were waiting nervously to cross the road, and I stopped to let them pass. One stood squarely in the middle of my lane, facing me, until all but the last straggler of the dozen had crossed and then went on with the rest. I thought, what an accommodating town for pedestrians - even geese have crossing guards.
