We should have known that our favorite would take a literary turn, in Harvard Square no less. "This sandwich has many, many fans," says manager Judson MacRae, and not just among Dr. Seuss readers. One egg from a free-range chicken gets fried in butter – it's best if you request it over easy – and is topped with hand-cut double-smoked bacon and spinach sauteed with onions. It's all mashed between two pieces of grilled homemade potato roll. It's hard to say which part is the standout: the thick, crispy bacon, the moist spinach, or the soft, warm bread. Bottom line "I like green eggs and ham! I do! I like them, Sam-I-am!"

For the fan who shuns butter but still wants the complete bacon-egg-and-cheese package, try this version from a Watertown Square eatery. They fry the egg in vegetable oil and only spread butter on the English muffin if you ask. Warm, gooey American cheese melds the flavors and makes this sammy sing. We love this place, especially for its fast and ultra-friendly service. Bottom line Go for the neighborliness as much as for the sandwich.

The longtime Beacon Hill establishment serves melt-in-your-mouth sandwiches that guarantee an unabashed full-on grease fest. Not only is your egg fried in butter to a golden brown, so is the bread. Crisp bacon provides a perfect counterpoint to the yielding egg, cheese, and bread. Bottom line It kicks the Egg McMuffin to the curb.
