Good Mom

I was chagrined when I arrived at the Boston Conservatory Theater to see Cosi Fan Tutte on a Saturday night and learned that my tickets were for Friday. The performance was sold out, and we were put on a long waiting list. While I was apologizing profusely to my companion for my "senior moment," a woman nearby displayed two tickets. "Are you selling those?" we asked eagerly. "No. I want to give them away," she said, refusing money. "Please just applaud for my daughter, who is playing the role of the maid!" The production was delightful - and her daughter did a wonderful job.

BAD SON

On a rainy Friday night last month, my son and I were standing under the awning of the Forest Cafe in Cambridge, near Harvard University, waiting for my husband to pick us up. A young man in his early 20s came down the sidewalk and stopped beside us. He was talking on his cellphone. After a minute, he said, "Ma, I have to call you back later. I'm going into the library now." Click. And he headed inside, straight to the bar.
