Hanging Loose

Handcrafted modern sock monkeys appeal to children and collectors.

Mokeybiz sock monkeys all have spindly limbs, button eyes, and charming embroidered hearts, and most of them come in traditional brown, white, and red. But it’s the one-offs in other colors – a claret cotton-cashmere blend with thick, hand-whipstitched electric-yellow trim, for example – that even grown-up stuffed-animal fans will fall for. Creator Jay Page lives in Watertown, and the toys ($65) are sold at Oak, a high-end boutique in Back Bay that features handmade goods. He thinks of the pricey playthings as keepsakes: Page, who is 39, still has “Mokey,” the monkey his great-aunts made for him when he was 6 years old. Now that’s cute.
