Pepperidge Farm wishes it could forget

Posted by Robin Abrahams February 12, 2008 08:48 AM

Talk about your S&M Food Service. Let's all be in agreement, now, there are no finer cookies than Pepperidge Farm's Milanos, okay? (The classic ones. Don't go putting me off with these upstart "double chocolate," "with orange," and "white chocolate with chocolate cookie" deviations they've been coming up with.) But the copy on the bag is downright disturbing. Get this:

Begin with a baker's soul. Seek the finest ingredients. Explore nature's infinite variety of flavors and textures -- sweet, crunchy, rich ... oh, and chocolate. Entertain inspirations. Embrace decadent cravings. Reward yourself. Open ... Taste ... Delight.

Dude, they're cookies. Change "baker" to "bishop" and "chocolate" to "leather" and the above could have been written by Rimbaud or de Sade. Which is, frankly, a bit much. Whatever debased ecstasies Pepperidge Farm is remembering in the haze of its absinthe dreams, I don't think I want to know.
