PROVIDENCE - Dennis M. Lynch, a former Pawtucket mayor who also served in state government posts under five governors, has died. He was 74.

Mr. Lynch died Sunday at a Providence hospital after being stricken at home by an unknown illness.

He served five terms as mayor of his hometown of Pawtucket from 1973 to 1981. He became director of Rhode Island's Division of Purchases under Governor J. Joseph Garrahy in 1981. He held several other state posts before retiring in 2003.

Mr. Lynch leaves his wife Irene and six children. Among them are Attorney General Patrick Lynch of Rhode Island and state Democratic Party chairman William Lynch.
