Anne Marie "Nancy" (Hughes) Harrington, a former newspaper reporter and columnist, died Sunday at South Shore Hospital of complications of a heart ailment. Mrs. Harrington, 76 and a Weymouth resident, previously lived in Dorchester.

A Boston native, Mrs. Harrington was a reporter for the Dorchester Argus Citizen and Dorchester Reporter. She also wrote two columns, "Nancy's Pen" and "Nancy's Notes."

A graduate of Emmanuel College, she was active in the Dorchester community, helping to organize building of the Richard J. Murphy Elementary School and serving as president of the Pope's Hill Neighborhood Association.

Mrs. Harrington leaves three sons, Joseph of Hanover, Thomas of Weymouth, and John of Shrewsbury; six daughters, Ann of Weymouth, Margaret Garity of Hanover, Elaine Heitkamp of Duxbury, Kathleen of North Reading, Theresa Veitch of Duxbury, and Helen Coyne of Walpole; a sister, Elaine Sheehan of Dorchester; and 18 grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be said tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Weymouth.
