Walter Power III
Walter "Tip" Power III, a longtime sales engineer and resident of Salem, died April 18 of lymphoma at North Shore Medical Center. He was 77.
Mr. Power was born and raised in Marblehead. He graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a degree in mechanical engineering and got his master's in business from Northeastern University. In 1955, he started working as a sales engineer, opening the Power Sales Group Inc., which serviced New England utilities, in 1992. After he sold the company in 2002, he mentored start-up businesses and entrepreneurs for the Salem State College Enterprise Center.
Mr. Power was also active on several of Salem's boards and commissions, serving as chairman of the Planning Board for more than 30 years. In his free time, Mr. Power enjoyed the stock market, wines, and vegetable gardening. He also enjoyed occasional weekends at the family camp in Shapleigh, Maine.
Mr. Power leaves his wife, Sandra (Sherman); three sons, Walter IV of Amsterdam, Sherman of Naperville, Ill., and Matthew of Salem; a daughter, Elizabeth of Seattle; a brother, James Peyton of Sanibel Island, Fla., and Shapleigh, Maine; and five grandchildren.
A service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Tabernacle Church in Salem.![]()
