NEW YORK - Mona Hinton, widow of jazz bassist and photographer Milt Hinton, died Saturday at a hospital after a long illness. She was 89.

Born Edmonia Clayton in Illinois, she met her husband at his grandmother's funeral in 1939. Milt Hilton played with legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, and Bing Crosby. He also took documentary photos of famous musicians.

Mrs. Hinton managed their life together, keeping track of finances and making travel arrangements. She was one of the few wives to travel with the Cab Calloway Orchestra in the 1940s, and took on the task of making sure band members had food.

Milt Hinton died in 2000.
