William McCabe
William McCabe, a former professor at Boston University's medical school, died May 24 at his home in Virginia Beach, Va. He was 80.An internationally regarded authority on infectious diseases, Dr. McCabe authored 145 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals, his family said. He was a founding member of Infectious Diseases Society of America.
Dr. McCabe was born in Hugo, Okla.
He received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma and completed his postgraduate training in internal medicine at University of Oklahoma Hospitals. In 1958, he became a fellow in infectious diseases at the University of Illinois.
He was a veteran of the Korean War.
Dr. McCabe joined the BU faculty in 1963 and was a professor of internal medicine until 1991. He served as a professor of microbiology at the University of New Mexico from 1990 to 1993 and chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Marshall University from 1993 to 1998. He retired to Virginia Beach.
Dr. McCabe leaves one son, Scott of Virginia Beach; and two daughters, Deborah White of Hondo, Texas, and Jennifer Lee Reynolds of Framingham.
Services will be held in early September in Wellesley Hills First Congregational Church in Wellesley Hills.
Richardson Benton
CHESTER, N.H. - Richardson Benton, a longtime New Hampshire state representative and local official in Chester, has died at age 93.Mr. Benton - known to many as "The Colonel" during his 22 years at the state house - died of natural causes May 29 in San Diego, where he had family.
He was chairman of the House committee that handles veterans issues for 18 years and took part in numerous projects to benefit Chester.
Mr. Benton was awarded three bronze stars while fighting in World War II and Korea and retired as a colonel.
He was a Chester selectman and was involved in virtually every major development in the town for four decades. His volunteer work included taking children on tours of Parkland Medical Center so they wouldn't be afraid of going to a hospital.
In 2000, Mr. Benton donated money for an addition to the town library in memory of his wife, who died in 1992. (AP)![]()
