Alice Gray Woodall
Alice Gray Woodall, an artist and philanthropist, died July 26 at her home in Jamaica Plain. She was 98.
Mrs. Woodall was born in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and raised in Boston. She attended East Boston High School.
After graduating, Mrs. Woodall attended the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. She kept a studio on Boylston Street, where she painted and showcased her artwork through the 1930s.
Mrs. Woodall moved with her family in the early 1930s to Jamaica Plain, where she would remain involved in community affairs for the rest of her life. She enjoyed the Footlight Club, which bills itself as the oldest continuously performing amateur theater in the country. She performed, directed, and designed costumes.
Mrs. Woodall was also involved with the Tuesday Club, which restored and manages the historic Loring-Greenough House in Jamaica Plain. Mrs. Woodall gave tours of the house, often in period costumes she had sewn herself.
She was married to the late Dr. J. Martin Woodall. She leaves a daughter, Alice W. Comiskey; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.![]()
