Thomas B. Hayes, a doctor and hospital administrator, died Sunday at the Prescott House Nursing Home in North Andover. He was 86.
Dr. Hayes was born in Lawrence and spent most his life in North Andover. He graduated from Emory University and Harvard Medical School and completed his residency at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton.
During World War II, Dr. Hayes served in the US Navy as a pharmacist mate and a neuropsychology technician. He also served in the Army during the Korean War as a post surgeon in Japan.
Dr. Hayes was chief of surgery at Lawrence General Hospital from 1965 to 1968 and president of Bon Secours Hospital in Methuen from 1971 to 1973 and also served as that hospital's director of emergency medical services. Throughout his career, Dr. Hayes also maintained general practices.
He leaves his wife, Loretta Spires; three daughters, Judi Mancini of Paxton, Mary Beth Hayes Rentschler of Chelmsford, and Cathy Hayes Lee of North Andover; seven sons, Thomas Jr. of Haverhill, Michael of Manchester, N.H., Kevin of North Andover, John of Kittery, Maine, Daniel of Chadds Ford, Pa., Brian of Randleman, N.C., and Patrick of Hampton, N.H; a brother, Francis Hays of North Andover; a sister, Dorothea Myers of North Andover; 14 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be said today at 10 a.m. in St. Michael's Church in North Andover.
Sarah F. Mason
Sarah F. (Daley) Mason, a longtime teacher and Lexington resident, died July 23 at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington. She was 78.
Mrs. Mason grew up in Medford and graduated from Thayer Academy in Braintree. She earned a journalism degree from Boston University.
She began her career in Medford, where she taught elementary French, and in Arlington, where she was a classroom teacher. She went to France for a year to teach at a US Air Force base and to study French.
When she returned to the area, she worked as a French specialist for Melrose schools and later as a reading specialist and classroom teacher in Medford. She retired in 1991.
Mrs. Mason enjoyed spending time with her family, watching the Red Sox, and sewing.
Along with her husband of 47 years, Russell B. Mason, she leaves a son, Thomas of Lakeville; a brother, Paul V. Daley of Yarmouth, Maine; a sister, H. Kathryn Ecker of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and two granddaughters.
