Robert E. Huffman

Robert Eugene Huffman, a scientist who worked for the Air Force, died of lymphoma Aug. 14 in Cambridge.

He was 77.

Dr. Huffman, who split his time between Albuquerque and Sudbury, was born in Breckenridge, Texas. He was valedictorian from Texas A & M University in 1953, and received his PhD in physics from the California Institute of Technology.

He coordinated Air Force laboratories in Massachusetts and New Mexico, specializing in aeronomy, the physics and chemistry of the Earth's upper atmosphere.

He won awards and in 1992 published a book, "Atmospheric Ultraviolet Remote Sensing."

Dr. Huffman retired in 1988.

He married Jacquelin Murray, who died in 1992.

Dr. Huffman leaves a son, Rob of Arlington; two daughters, Carol of Framingham and Elaine Rege of Longmeadow; a brother, Eddie of Wichita Falls, Texas; a sister, Betty Fields of Breckenridge, Texas; and one grandchild.

A memorial service will be held today at 1 p.m. in Memorial Congregational Church in Sudbury. Burial was private.
