Thomas Gaquin
Thomas E. Gaquin, a former FBI agent and longtime employee at John Hancock Life Insurance in Boston, died Sept. 27 in his West Roxbury home. He was 92.Mr. Gaquin was born in Boston and grew up in Dorchester. He graduated from Boston College High School in 1933 and received a bachelor's degree in French from Boston College in 1937.
When Mr. Gaquin learned the FBI was looking for agents who could speak other languages, he applied, said his daughter, Barbara G. Brandt of Norwood. He was trained in Spanish and served in Mexico, Guatemala, and Colombia, as a special agent during World War II, she said.
In 1945, he married Audrey (Swendeman). He left the FBI in 1946, moved to West Roxbury, and began working at John Hancock as the director of a unit that investigated claims. He retired in 1984.
Mr. Gaquin was an avid golfer and member of the Wollaston Golf Club. He was a huge fan of Boston College athletics, especially football and hockey.
Mr. Gaquin's wife died in 1998. In addition to his daughter Barbara, he leaves two other daughters, Audrey G. Buck of Annapolis, Md., and Helen G. Niedermeier of South Burlington, Vt.; and nine grandchildren.
Services have been held.
Merton Weinberg
Merton M. Weinberg of Brookline died Sept. 29 of complications from surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He was 82.Mr. Weinberg, a Boston native, had been a cab owner and driver before working in real estate.
His greatest love was volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House in Brookline, where he could be found three to five days a week, said his wife, Janet. He would help the staff with any administrative assistance, but he was happiest helping out with the children, his wife said.
"He loved spending time with the kids," she said.
In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters, Alissa of Wake Forest, N.C., and Susan of West Stockbridge, and three granddaughters. Services have been held.![]()
