Mary Elizabeth "Betty" (Carolan) Winter, a former teacher and Sudbury resident, died Oct. 11 at her family's home in Concord. She was 88.

Mrs. Winter was born and raised in Brookline. She graduated from Brookline High School in 1938, and from Wheelock College in Boston with a degree in early childhood education in 1942.

Mrs. Winter also attended graduate school at Boston University.

She taught in the public school system for six years, beginning in 1943. Mrs. Winter was a remedial reading specialist and continued to tutor elementary school children into her late 70s.

In 1949, she married William West Winter, who preceded her in death. The couple lived in New Canaan, Conn., for several years before moving to Sudbury in 1964.

Mrs. Winter worked as a tour guide and museum hostess at Longfellow's Wayside Inn for 16 years, beginning in 1970. She also served as a trustee for the Sudbury Historical Society, and as a corporator for Framingham Union Hospital from 1969 to 1988.

Mrs. Winter enjoyed music, the theater, and spending summers in Maine, Duxbury, and on Cape Cod. She was also an avid reader and was passionate about early American architecture and history.

Mrs. Winter leaves two daughters, Susan West Winter Frommer and Anna West Winter Rasmussen, both of Concord; a brother, James J. Carolan of Novato, Calif.; a sister, Jane Whittle of Chatham; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Martha Mary Chapel in Sudbury. Burial will be private.
