NEW YORK - Carole Caldwell Graebner, who won doubles titles at the US and Australian championships in the 1960s, died in New York City yesterday, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer, said her daughter, Cameron Graebner Mark. She was 65.

The top-ranked doubles player in the United States in 1963, Ms. Graebner teamed with Nancy Richey to capture titles at the 1965 US Championships, now the US Open, and the 1966 Australian Championships, now the Australian Open.

She won doubles titles at the 1965 and 1966 US Clay Court Championships and was a finalist in singles at 1964 US Championships, losing to Maria Bueno.

Ms. Graebner was ranked in the US top 10 in singles from 1961-65 and 1967. She was a member of the inaugural 1963 US Fed Cup team, and she had played college tennis alongside Billie Jean King at California State University at Los Angeles.

Ms. Graebner later served the US Tennis Association as chairwoman of the Fed Cup committee. "Carole and I first met when we were both 12 years old and remained lifelong friends," King said. "More than any other person, Carole worked tirelessly behind the scenes to be the driving force and influential leader of Fed Cup."
