Richard E. Halloran, a retired businessman, died Sunday of cardiac failure at his South Yarmouth home. He was 82.
Mr. Halloran was born in Wakefield, where he graduated from Wakefield High School before serving in the US Coast Guard during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, as a yeoman first class, he attended Northeastern University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration.
He spent 20 years as director of sales for Sealand Services, a commercial ocean cargo carrier company now owned by Maersk Line of Denmark. During that time, he lived in Melrose, Braintree, Houston, and Middletown, N.J. He retired in 1983 and moved to South Yarmouth.
In his retirement, he was active at Saint Pius X Church and served on the Yarmouth Golf Commission. He was proud to tell his friends he had once hit a hole in one.
He was an avid Red Sox fan, and his son, Bob, has been a sports anchor on WCVB-TV since 2003.
Joan M. (McBride), his wife of 56 years, died in 2005. In addition to his son, Mr. Halloran leaves five daughters, Patricia of Lakewood, N.J.; Regina of Middletown, N.J.; Paula Safreed of Cortland, Ohio; Jane Deegan of Swedesboro, N.J.; and Maura Fitzgerald of Franklin, Tenn.; and 10 grandchildren. A son, Richard, died in the 1970s.
A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. today in Saint Pius X. Burial will follow in Ancient Cemetery in Yarmouth Port.
