Correction: Because of a file error distributed by The Washington Post news service, yesterday's obituary for US Senator Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island incorrectly listed his son Herbert Claiborne Pell III as a survivor. Herbert Pell died in 1999, according to the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home of Newport, R.I., which is handling arrangements for Senator Pell's funeral.

Correction: Because of a reporting error, a Dec. 21 obituary on Dr. Angeliki E. Laiou incorrectly characterized one of her accomplishments as a Harvard University professor. She was for a time the only woman among the senior, tenured members of Harvard's history department, according to John Womack, a colleague in the department.
