FALMOUTH, Maine - Robert Woodbury, a former chancellor of the University of Maine system who also was a former senior administrator at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, died of lymphoma last Saturday at his home in Falmouth, his wife told the Portland Press Herald. He was 71.

Dr. Woodbury graduated from Amherst College in Massachusetts and later earned a doctorate from Yale University.

He began his career as a professor at the California Institute of Technology before his stint at UMass. He came to Maine in 1979 as president of the University of Southern Maine.

He served as chancellor of the University of Maine system, overseeing the state’s seven university campuses, from 1986 to 1993.

Besides his wife, Anne Pelletreau Woodbury, he leaves three sons and eight grand- children.
