BURLINGTON, Vt. — A retired Russian history expert from the University of Vermont and a former state senator from Chittenden County has died.

Robert V. “Bill’’ Daniels died Sunday at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

He was 84 and a Burlington native.

He earned an undergraduate degree and a PhD from Harvard University.

He taught at Bennington College and the University of Indiana before joining the faculty at UVM in 1956.

He was the first director of the Area and International Studies Program and served as chairman of the history department. He retired in 1988.

From 1973 to 1982, he served as a Democratic state senator from Chittenden County.

Dr. Daniels leaves his wife, Alice; a brother; four children; and four grandchildren.
