MEREDITH, N.H. — Carl Johnson of Meredith, who served in the New Hampshire Legislature for nearly 30 years, died Saturday at his home. He was 88.

The Citizen of Laconia reports that he served two terms in the House of Representatives, from 1990 to 1994, and five terms in the Senate, from 1994 to 2006. He sponsored bills for Plymouth State College to become a university, establishing the Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, and the protection of loons and wildlife.

Before World War II, Mr. Johnson signed a baseball contract with the Boston Braves and was a roommate of Warren Spahn, who went on to have a 21-year career as a Major League pitcher, finishing with the San Francisco Giants.

During the war, Mr. Johnson served in the South Pacific for three years.

According to The Citizen, Mr. Johnson leaves his wife of 67 years, Jeannette; a daughter, Linda; a son, Carl Jr., and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
