HARTFORD - RuthAnn Lobo, a longtime advocate for breast cancer awareness and the mother of UConn All-American Rebecca Lobo, has died at the age of 67.
Mike Enright, associate athletic director at the University of Connecticut, said RuthAnn Lobo died of cancer Tuesday.
Ms. Lobo was a teacher and school counselor in Connecticut for 30 years. In 2003 she became the first recipient of a statewide award honoring individuals for their impact through Title IX, the federal gender equity law. She was the Title IX coordinator for Granby Public Schools at the time.
Ms. Lobo and her daughter Rebecca wrote a book on dealing with her breast cancer diagnosis in the early 1990s.
Connecticut cancer prevention leader Anne Morris said Ms. Lobo was a forceful advocate for women fighting the disease.
