Paul Lawrence, at 89; pioneered study of organizational behavior
Paul Lawrence’s best-known work was “Organization and Environment: Managing Differentiation and Integration,’’ cited more than 2,000 times in professional journals.

The year Paul R. Lawrence turned 80, he published his 25th book, “Driven: How Human Nature Shapes Our Choices,’’ which looked at the four motivations that underlie human behavior. With his coauthor Nitin Nohria, Dr. Lawrence composed a list that had a poetic grace and simplicity. Humans, they wrote, are driven by the need to acquire and defend, to bond and comprehend. A Harvard Business School professor emeritus who helped establish the academic study of organizational behavior as a key way to understand everything from vibrant businesses to successful mayors, Dr. Lawrence died Nov. 1. He was 89.
