Paul Epstein, 67; sounded alarm on climate change contributing to disease
For the past 20 years, Dr. Paul Epstein was one of the most persistent and insistent voices in the medical community as he warned that climate change was contributing to the spread of infectious diseases. His career was as local as it was global, though. He offered climate change observations on a world stage, but also treated East Boston’s Portuguese-speaking immigrant community in the 1970s, created an early AIDS clinic in Cambridge in the 1980s, and inspired hundreds of Harvard students to put a privileged upbringing to good use. Dr. Epstein died Nov. 13 in his Brookline home. He was 67.
