For years, M. Perry Chapman Jr. headed the campus planning practice at a Watertown firm, working with colleges and universities across the country. An innovative planner who loved the outdoors, he wanted to dissolve the town-gown divide that traditionally isolated campuses from surrounding communities. “He was very interested in integrating the campuses into the natural environment and community in ways that were really forward-thinking,’’ said his friend David Hirzel. “He was always working to help bridge those gaps.’’
