At home in bluegrass and jazz, John McGann was a professor of strings at Berklee College of Music and a mainstay of Boston’s acoustic music scene on mandolin and guitar. “John was beyond category and beyond compare,’’ Matt Glaser artistic director of the American Roots Music Program at Berklee, said in a statement on the school’s website. “He was like a garden of musical and human gifts.’’
