Thirty-four people died when flood waters from Hurricane Katrina innundated the St. Rita's Nursing Home in Violet, LA. The owners, Salvador A. Mangano and Mable B. Mangano, have been charged with 34 counts of negilgent homicide by the Louisiana attorney general for failing to evacuate the patients. Authorities estimate that 140 mile-per-hour winds raked the town in St. Bernard Parish and that a 20-foot storm surge swept the town. Photographed September 14, 2005.
