As a "small gesture of gratitude" to its customers, the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad will distribute bottles of water to commuters leaving from North Station, South Station and Back Bay this evening.
Ridership on the trains has increased following the tunnel closures stemming from last week's fatal Big Dig accident. At the same time, the commuter rail has been trying to resolve longterm problems with the air-conditioning systems on several of its coaches. For many riders, those problems have only grown more unbearable with this week's heatwave. "Crews are working overtime to address this," said MBCR spokesman Scott Farmelant.
