Don't talk back to your mother

NEWTON

Newton's Toby Berla has a few modest proposals in today's Globe Letters to the Editor. Here's his letter:

NOW THAT Congress appears to be coming closer to changing the Constitution in order to grant itself the power to outlaw outrageous behaviors (such as burning the flag), I would like to propose a few more amendments:

The Congress shall have power to prohibit people from being disrespectful to their mothers.

The Congress shall have power to prohibit wearing white shoes between Labor Day and Easter.

The Congress shall have power to prohibit blaming pagans, abortionists, feminists, and gays for Sept. 11.

The Congress shall have power to prohibit Ralph Nader from saying ``a vote for Gore is a vote for Bush."

The Congress shall have power to prohibit itself from proposing constitutional amendments for purely political purposes.
