Violent thunderstorms may complicate the end of tonight’s commute as two air masses collide over Massachusetts and threaten to dump up to 3/4 of an inch of rain in as short as a half hour.

"These storms could have torrential downpours and damaging winds," said Meteorologist Alan Dunham of the National Weather Service in Taunton.

All of Massachusetts – excluding Cape Cod and the Islands – is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 p.m., Dunham said. Winds could reach speeds of up to 60 or 70 miles per hour. ...
