A Waltham-based program has become a national model for linking volunteers -- Visiting Moms -- with new mothers to support the mother-infant relationship, particularly after premature births or adoptions. The program at the Center for Early Relationship Support at Jewish Family & Children Services currently has 80 volunteers serving 130 mothers, a story in the Globe's Living/Arts section reports today. Visiting Moms director Debbie Whitehill says the help provided can be crucial. "We know now from all kinds of studies that parenting challenges of any kind can lead to poor relationahips and therefore poor outcome in terms of cognitive, social, and emotional development," she said.
