Blind sailing

NEWTON

The Carroll Center for the Blind turns out inventors, lawyers, businessmen and...sailors?

This weekend, some of the nation's top blind sailors will be in Newport, R.I., competing in the 2006 IFDS Blind Sailing World Championship regatta. Many of them learned to sail at the Carroll Center in the SailBlind Program, the Providence Journal reports.

Matt Chao, of Boston, won the silver medal for his division in 1997.

"It's a combination of blind and sighted working together as crew," he said. "It's not, 'You're blind -- I'll take you sailing.' We're working together to make the boat go as fast as possible."
