Halfway to a referendum

NEWTON

Activists opposed to the current site plan for a new Newton North High School site plan say they have gathered 1,250 of the required 2,500 signatures to put the issue before voters in a referendum, according to Jeff Seideman, who is working on the campaign.

Seideman, president of the Newton Taxpayers Association, gave the count as of yesterday morning. The petitioners have 20 days from the Sept. 5 meeting when aldermen approved the site plan to gather the required signatures.

If the campaign is successful, the question about the $140 million to $165 million school project would go on the ballot at a special election or municipal elections in November 2007.
