Newton has started to negotiate the purchase of a house next to the Crystal Lake swimming beach.
“We have opened the lines of dialogue," said city spokesman Jeremy Solomon. “The city is very interested in acquiring the property.”
The property belongs to Patrick Hannon, who has been in a long-running dispute with the city over the fate of his house, which was severely damaged by fire shortly after he bought it.
Hannon told Globe West that he was offering the 20 Rogers St. property for $4.5 million.
Solomon said the public can learn the latest on the negotiations, and on the city’s efforts at environmental renewal of the beach, at a community meeting on Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m., at Druker Auditorium at the Newton Free Library.
