Town counsel takes office -- for now

Westborough’s new town counsel, Gregory B. Franks, was sworn in today, but his tenure could be short-lived if a judge sides with Worcester District Attorney John J. Conte.

The DA says that the town violated the open meeting law by not making the finalists public.

A search committee last month submitted only Franks's name to the selectmen, who then appointed him. When Westborough refused to rescind the appointment, the DA filed suit.

Worcester Superior Court Judge Jeffrey A. Locke heard arguments from both sides two weeks ago and took the matter under advisement.

Westborough Town Coordinator Henry Danis said Monday that Franks was already working on existing town cases.
“He will continue to work unless God, nature or the courts steps in,” Danis said. -Jennifer Rosinski
