Solomont, a wealthy businessman, philanthropist, and premier Democratic fund-raiser, is looking to Governor-elect Deval Patrick to clear his path to public service, either in a Cabinet position in the new administration or as chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. A senior adviser in the Patrick camp said Solomont has made it clear to the governor-elect's advisers he is interested in being secretary of economic development, an agency that promotes business development and job creation and is considered a critical position in any administration. But Solomont also has privately expressed interest to education officials in becoming the new chancellor at UMass-Lowell, the Globe reports today. -- Frank Phillips Posted by the Boston Globe City & Region Desk at 09:16 AM
