Taking a dip for a reason

The last few months may have been some of the warmest on record, but don't tell that to the L Street Brownies.

Yesterday, about 500 people dove into the chilly Atlantic in one of the oldest New Year's Day swims in the country. Some of the participants dive for the exhiliration, but many have more serious reasons for braving the frigid waters.

"This is our sacrifice to the gods," David Hatch of Ashland told the Globe.

Hatch and his friend John Joyce, of Framingham, have swum each week since Hatch's wife Liz Strong was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last September. Joyce wore a purple wristband with Strong's name emblazoned on it.

They actually swim every week, regardless of weather conditions, to recognize Strong's battle with the illness.
