HIGH 5:
Highlighting the top performances from last night's state tournament action:

* Andrew Elman, Weston hockey: Senior center collected a goal and an assist as the Wildcats blanked Northeast/Malden 3-0 in the Division 3 North semifinals, avenging Weston's first-round loss to NE/Malden.

* Michael Russell, Wellesley boys' basketball: Senior forward capped an extraordinary final season with 19 points in a 66-53 loss to Nauset in the Division 2 South semifinals.

WHAT'S ON TAP:
* The Franklin boys' hockey team (20-1-1) owns two victories over Canton this season. But with a win tonight at 5:30 over their Hockomock League rival in Bourne, the Panthers will earn a trip to Sunday's Division 2 South final. Hock MVP Tim Alberts (23 goals, 20 assists) powers Franklin attack and sophomore Jeff Kaplan (1.66 goals against average) has been superb in net.

* The St. John's Shrewsbury basketball team faces a tall task, and a very familiar foe, in tonight's Division 1 Central final at WPI (7:30 p.m.). The Pioneers (18-6) face rival Holy Name (18-4), which has already beaten SJ's twice this season (60-48, Dec. 27 and 69-43, Jan. 23). But coach Bob Foley's young Pioneers have played well down the stretch and are receiving strong play from 6-8 sophomore Matt LaBove in the post and freshman guard David White on the wing.
