Scores of seniors in several communities will lace up their sneakers Thursday and Friday and walk to raise money for the Meals on Wheels program, which delivers food to needy elders.
In recent years, the annual event has raised close to $20,000 for the program, which is offered by senior centers through an umbrella group, the South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC) in Framingham.
Diana Leonard, director of SMOC’s Elderly Nutrition Program, said that approximately falf of the program's budget is covered by donations. More than 140,000 meals a year are delivered to seniors in their homes or offered at senior centers in 14 communities, Leonard said.
Seniors have collected pledges from businesses, organizations and individuals and will walk around their local centers, Leonard said. The walks will take place at each town’s senior center at the following times:
Natick -10 a.m.
Sudbury -10 a.m.
Northborough - 11 a.m.
Hudson - 1 p.m.
Marlborough - 10 a.m.
Anyone wishing to make a donation is urged to send a check payable to "The Elderly Nutrition Program – Walkathon" to SMOC at 300 Hoard St., Framingham, MA, 01702.
