Dedham defeats senior center
After 20 years of discussions, and at least four potential locations, Dedham residents soundly rejected a proposal Saturday to fund an $8.65 million senior center.
It's the first failed debt exclusion override in at least 12 years, said Town Clerk Paul Munchbach. The 1,928 to 1,572 vote drew 22.1 percent of the town's registered voters.
Approval of the facility planned for Bridge Street would have raised the average tax bill by $61 a year. Dedham's Council on Aging will continue to offer programs and services in rented space in Traditions of Dedham, a senior housing complex on Washington Street, said Selectman Chairman James MacDonald.

what a joke.
the people of Dedham would rather not pay $61 a year than have a place for seniors to enjoy the rest of their lives?
typical. everyone wants something but won't spend a penny for it.
The people of Dedham do want a place for Seniors but do not feel 9 million dollars needs to be spent. Also we feel that because for nearly 40 years nothing was done.....priority now needs to be put on the fire department, police department and the many schools that are in desperate need of repair. The article in the Boston Globe just told of the result of the election but without knowing what really is happening in Dedham I feel you should not have made such a harsh statement.
I am a Dedham resident.....I volunteer alot. We are a town that needs alot of fixing up because like I said for 40 years nothing was done. I feel the no vote was a very responsible vote....it goes far beyond just $ 61.00 a year.
