Hecht wins Watertown primary

Posted by David Dahl, Regional Editor September 17, 2008 08:31 AM

Jonathan Hecht appears to have won a four way Democratic primary for a legislative seat that includes Watertown and parts of Cambridge, according to unofficial returns posted early Wednesday morning.

The House seat was vacated when Rachel Kaprielian was picked by Governor Deval Patrick to be the registrar of motor vehicles.

Hecht, 50, is a senior researcher at Yale Law School specializing in Chinese law. He serves on the board of directors and the executive committee for the Mass. Municipal Association and is vice-president of the Mass. Municipal Councilors Association. Hecht circulated a mass mailing citing his support by Gov. Patrick.

His leading challenger was Julia Fahey, 32, an attorney from Watertown who has served as labor counsel for Service Employees International Union, a division of the National Association of Government Employees since 2002.

TOTAL DISTRICT VOTES (Watertown and Cambridge combined)

Hecht 3006
Fahey 2118
Corbett 318
Weisbuch 10
