Springsteen visits BC, Newton

Posted September 30, 2008 08:12 AM

Rocker Bruce Springsteen and his wife, Patti Scialfa, watched BC blow out URI Saturday from the comfort of the president's box at Alumni Stadium, the Globe's Names column reports. (It was parents weekend at the Heights and the couple's son Evan is a freshman.)

At halftime, the Globe's Mark Blaudschun, who grew up in New Jersey, briefly talked to the Boss about their shared history. "At some point, Patti said to me, 'You have beautiful blue eyes,' " Blaudschun told us. "I put my hand on Bruce's shoulder and said, 'That's why I love Jersey girls.' " Springsteen laughed.

(Broadcaster Bob Costas, whose daughter Taylor is a BC freshman, was also in the box.) We're told Springsteen and Scialfa attended the Pops on the Heights concert the night before the game.

Meantime, there are reports that Springsteen and Scialfa stopped by a grocery store in Newtonville on Sunday.

It was announced this week that Springsteen and the E Street Band will play at the 2009 Super Bowl halftime show in Tampa.

  1. Don't you think it is an invasion of privacy to announce to the world that the son of one of the world's biggest rock stars is attending a local college? It is even worse that you gave the child's first name (and yes a freshman in college is still a child). The same goes for Bob Costas's daughter.. As a mother, I think what you did was high unprofessional, irresponsible and reprehensible and could have possibly endangered this child with all the nut case stalkers out there. These children have the right to attend college in private. I'm sure BC is not sending out press releases but doing what they can to keep their privacy.
Do you think that was worth getting your name in that paper? You should be fired.

  1. Zachary Smith,

If your kid spells like you do then maybe that has something to do with the fact that your child didn't get accepted into BC.

  1. Zach, it's pretty obvious you didn't get in.

Wake up and smell the coffee please. No one is trying to invade privacy notice the published account is after he left town. Also it is a well know fact the name of Springsteen's and Costa's kids as anyone who can access a bio of either celebrity. trust me these celebrities have taken into consideration their own kids safty and have provided the best that they could as any parent would. perhaps it is you that needs to reduce your paranoia a bit and left people live normal lives.

  1. I wonder if President Leahy, SJ invited the Freshman with the poorest parents to the Presidential Box. I know Jesus would.

  1. First off I'm still pretty sure that all incoming freshman still get a freshman facebook with all the students names and pictures. Secondly anybody can go online and get this info wether it's through myspace, facebook, or their famous dad's bios. Also Springsteen has never hid the fact that his son was going to BC, and Bob Costas talked about it on one of the Late Night Talk Shows. Let's all relax and find something better to talk about, like the economy or that war thing, or how funny Tina Fey is on SNL

I suspect it was Costas and Springsteen's notoriety that elicited an invitation by President Leahy, rather than their financial contribution to their child's education or BC's endowment.

Let's not make a mountain out of a molehill

    RE: Zachary Smith

Your response was not only nonsensical, but also ignorant and unfounded. It offends those whose families have long and important histories with the legacy of Boston College. As a private institution, it should not and cannot be held to the standards of a public university. If you want institutions based on SAT scores and numbers alone than you should be satisfied with the state collegiate system. The education provided at BC has not risen to the level of such excellence because of poor admission policy.

  1. RE: Colin;
Well, you almost sounded intelligent until your submission resorted to name calling and insinuation that you are of superior intelligence. Boston College academics has not risen to greatness because, at this point in their history, the administration is more concerned with image and consideration of future monetary gains from the rich and powerfull. They now seem to be concerned about the publicity surrounding the elite that they admit. And you cannot maintain a high standard of academics lest you set standards too high for the elite to master.

  1. Number 3 and 4, this is why people ridicule self important, blowhard BC alums. I assume you went to BC because you didn't get into the college of your choice-if you didn't go there to drink 4 years of your parents money away, why would you have when most of BC's departments don't even rank in the top 50 (including English). BC will never be the school you didn't get into-deal with it.

BC's slick efforts to exaggerate its academic image through Flutie and football pr have certainly paid dividends in more apps and a lower acceptance rate and all important US News ranking, But let's not forget it is only 1 generation removed from a broke, commuter party and safety school.

BC is the most shameless school I've seen when it comes to exploiting sweetheart press by its alums at Boston.com and elsewhere. It wouldn't do so if it didn't feel it had to to mask its real inadequacies.

  1. The administration of BC is shameless. This is yet another example. I am a big Springsteen fan, but wouldn't a Nobel prize winner or Macarthur Fellow be more deserving of a university president's attention? BC hides its mediocrity behind its well-manicured veneer and lulls its parishoners...er...students and their families, enticing them to spend hundred of thousands of dollars on a beer-and-vodka-sodden, parochial educational experience that has more similarity to a cloistered wealthy suburban high school than an intellectually challenging university in the 21st century real world. The instituiton is blind to itself and its actual position in the larger academic world; its heavy-handed and anachronistic religiosity forbids and numbs the essential elements of education: questioning, creativity and true intellectual discourse.

  1. I am a huge Bruce fan but a bit disappointed that he saw fit to send his kid to school with such elite clientele. Don't look now Boss, but the your kids are going to be so far removed from your working class history, that I can't imagine their contribution to society being anything less than their graduating peers.... a group of self centered rich kids with no appreciation for those less fortunate than themselves. Hope I am wrong.
As for hanging with the President of the College, I am sure his son would have had a better time in the stands with the rest of his class and their families.

  1. BC bashers listen up. Our son is a sophomore at BC. He has made the Dean's list, he's involved in a leadership program and helps out in many community service programs in Boston. He comes from a true working class family. Bronx raised, Catholic school educated parents. He grew up in Jersey and is proud of it. We are not a wealthy family and he has worked his hardest to attend BC. College life is what you make it. He is not a "self-centered rich kid" and doesn't take for granted one minute of the excellent education he is receiving. We are proud of his decision to attend such a wonderful institution and even prouder of his accomplishments.
