Posted December 31, 2008 10:18 PM

A New Year's Eve fire severely damaged a historic $1.8 million home in Brookline, burning for more than an hour on the second and third floors while firefighters battled the blaze from the outside.

No one was injured in the three-alarm fire, which was reported at 7:27 p.m. at 83 Penniman Place, fire officials said. Officials said the blaze remains under investigation.

No one was home at the time of the fire, but homeowners Stephen P. Crosby and Helen Strieder were notified. The wood-framed, single-family Greek revival home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and his recognized for its architecture.
