Saugus: a few tax facts

WHAT: Saugus voters will be asked to approve a $5.2 million override of Proposition 2 1/2, the state's tax cap law.
WHEN: April 24
POTENTIAL TAX HIKE: If approved, the average tax bill would increase by $400 in fiscal 2008, which starts July 1. The current average tax bill is $3,226.72, on a home that costs $389,700, the average assessed value of a single-family home in town.
POTENTIAL CUTS: If the override fails, cuts could include the loss of 18 teachers, 17 crossing guards, 4 secretaries, 3 part-time custodians, 10 custodians who fill in for summer vacations. Four police officers and two firefighters would be cut, plus some administrative personnel. Town Hall would close on Friday.
