Seven town property tax questions on Tuesday ballots
Voters in at least seven municipalities will go to the polls Tuesday to decide whether to raise their property taxes under the Prop 2 1/2 override procedure.
They are Needham, Newburyport, Brockton, East Bridgewater, Mattapoisett, Walpole and Shirley.
In Newburyport, there is a local ballot question on a proposed debt exclusion, a 10-year tax increase to repay debt. The $7.8 million being requested would free up funds in the operating budget to restore school programs, fund infrastructure repairs, replace vehicles and equipment, and help meet the city’s retirement costs.
South of Boston, some town officials tell correspondent Chris Legere that they expect a big turnout because of the presidential race.
"I think this is going to be a historic vote," Town Clerk Ron Fucile said of the expected turnout in Walpole, which has 14,000 registered voters. "We've got over 1,000 absentee ballots already."
Fucile said the library trustees considered the turnout when deciding whether to place the library question on the Nov. 4 ballot.
"They decided they would rather have it on that ballot when more people would vote," Fucile said.

How does a Liberal Democrat consider a local tax increase as a good thing when it means that poorer communities are being left behind?
Pat, I am no fan of tax overides but your logic is faulty. Residents have the right to throw more money to their city or town. Fairness is not the goal of taxation. You dont need a desk made of mahoghany to understand math. Money isnt the answer for helping poor towns, involved and caring parents will remedy any disparity. I dont need money to take interest in my kids.
When are these towns going to realize that they cannot keep burdening homowners with more taxes? Isn't the foreclosure rate high enough for them? Enough is enough. These cities and towns better start realizing, and damn soon, that they can't balance their budget on the backs of taxpayers who can barely make ends meet now.
