Introducing TJX

The TJX Companies, Inc. is the world's largest off-price retailer of apparel and home fashions with our Corporate Home Office located in Framingham, MA. We're a Fortune 200 company with over $17 billion in revenues, eight businesses, and more than 2,400 stores. TJX is comprised of T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, A.J. Wright and Bob's Stores in the United States, Winners and HomeSense in Canada, and T.K. Maxx in Europe.

Our customers love the thrill of the treasure hunt. We offer the same brand name merchandise that is found in department and specialty stores for less. These great values are provided through our opportunistic buying model and our relationships with our vendors. TJX sources from over 9,000 vendors in over 80 countries, so we can take advantage of the many opportunities in the marketplace as they arise. Our stores are truly never the same place twice.

Our Culture

TJX's core values of respect, integrity and fairness are inherent in the relationships we build with each other, our vendors and our customers. We are committed to leveraging the differences among our associates and customers to create both a diversified mix of talent within TJX and a diversified mix of merchandise within our stores. Your skills, your interests and your uniqueness are the building blocks of our culture. Whether you have a new idea, question or concern, TJX keeps an open door and an open mind.

A career in merchandising

One of the most exciting aspects of our business is merchandising. Merchandising is at the heart of TJX and a career in Merchandise Planning and Allocation or Merchandise Buying gives you what you need for a successful career in corporate retail. Our Corporate Merchandise Training Program is a unique opportunity to learn about the world of merchandising in a corporate setting where training is an integral part of your career. After college, there is no better way to start your career than being part of one of the best and most respected training programs in the industry.

From day one, you have a career path mapped out for you, starting with a 12-week-long intensive and comprehensive training program. Training incorporates the classroom setting and on the job training to learn about the Off-Price Industry, creating allocation strategies and managing the merchandise mix. After training, your career begins in Merchandise Planning and Allocation, where you will drive sales by analyzing trends, anticipating customer buying patterns and managing inventory levels.

As your career continues, you will pursue a career in either Planning or Buying. In Merchandise Buying, you'll learn how to buy and negotiate for off-price merchandise. As a global retailer, you will also have an opportunity to travel or work internationally as your career progresses. Buyers and Planners for TJX are responsible for up to $150 million in sales. Merchandising is the heart of our company and truly drives our business - a perfect place to build a dynamic and successful retail career. So, how would YOU manage $150 million?

The skills for success

Now that you have learned a little about merchandising, what skills are we looking for? First, prior retail experience is not essential for a career in merchandising. Most candidates for the program have a business-related degree (i.e. business, fashion merchandising, marketing), but we recruit all academic majors with strong academic performance. The skills that are critical for success include:

  • Analytical and leadership skills
  • Creative and strategic thinking
  • An excitement for merchandise
  • Problem-solving and multi-tasking ability
