Sustainable-design architect

What they do: Design and build structures that are environmentally friendly as whole and/or are built using green methods and materials.

Salary range: $50,000 to $200,000

Education/experience: Bachelor's or master's degree, and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation

Growth forecast: In 2002, the US Green Building Council reports, 2,400 architects earned LEED accreditation; by this year, that number had jumped to 40,000 as LEED became an industry standard. A new emphasis on building green will make architecture a "more exciting, challenging, rewarding profession," says Jim Batchelor, president and CEO of the Somerville firm Arrowstreet.
