Traders and investors reacted today after financial giant Lehman Brothers announced it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The Dow Jones industrial average closed down 504 points, its sixth worst one-day point loss in history and the largest drop since September 2001. The government had balked at providing a bailout for Lehman, the fourth largest investment bank in the country, deeming its situation not dire enough to take action.
