Organizers gain $1 million in past month, need $6.5 million more
BOSTON --Organizers of Democratic National Convention in Boston have raised an additional $1 million since the beginning of March, but remain $6.5 million short of their fundraising goal for the July 26-29 event.
The host committee announced Tuesday that it has raised $58 million to date, which includes $25 million from the federal government to help cover the cost of security at the first national political convention since the Sept. 11 attacks.
The total budget for the four-day event is $64.5 million. About half of the $1 million raised in the last month came from private donations, while the remainder came in the form of in-kind donation.
Julie Burns, leader of the Boston host committee, said she was comfortable with the fundraising pace and confident the goal will be met by July 26.
When competing for the right to hold the convention, the city received $20 million in commitments from private contributors. That effort was credited with helping Boston win the bid in November 2002.
